Naturally, what you do as a leader depends on the activity that you do and on your personality (and leadership) style.
The most active Jambo Chapter (Jambo Japan in Tokyo) has found the following instructions helpful for its leaders. Generally, Jambo Japan holds hikes (which charge about $10 per person) and outdoor volunteer activities (free of charge).
On the hikes, half of the money going to the charity of the month (and a little money for running Jambo) and half going to the event organizer (using this money for any incurred expenses as well).
Outdoor volunteer events include ocean/river clean ups and environmental projects (cutting down bamboo grass so tree seeds and saplings get sunlight, getting rid of invasive species, cutting down diseased trees, encouraging more native biodiversity).
HIKING
As a leader, there are 5 things you are asked to do (on the day of the hike):
Before the hike
1) Explain about where the money is going to (the Charity of the Month).
2) Ask if there are any first timers. If there are, have them introduce themselves and, at the end of all of the introductions, encourage them to sign up on the JAMBO website and/or Facebook.
3) Make sure to have a medical kit (bandages and anti-bacterial spray at a minimum).
During the hike
4) Talk to everyone who joins (even just a little bit, during the course of the walk) to make everyone feel welcome. (Try to especially help shy people or those who “don’t quite fit” mix with the group, if possible)
5) Assign someone (a JAMBO regular) to walk at the back if there are a large number of people (rotate the back person periodically so one person isn’t stuck with it the whole hike). Always wait at every junction (or anyplace where it could be possible for someone to go the wrong way) for everyone to make sure everyone takes the right path.
After the hike
1) Fill out the attendance form and give it and half of the money to JAMBO. You keep half of the money for being the organizer.
2) Share pictures with Jambo, so they can post them on the picture page. Also, if you post pictures of the hike somewhere (on a public photo page or facebook, for example), please inform Jambo of the link/SNS so it can be publicized on various Jambo media.
Payment System
All participants pay 1000 yen (about US$10), except for any children high school age or younger, who can join free. The leader is requested to also pay 1000 yen (as a show of support), as well as her or his transport fees. The leader keeps half of the total collected money with the other half going to JAMBO (for the charity and fees for running Jambo).
VOLUNTEER
As a leader, for a volunteer event, you are asked to:
Before the event
1) Ask if there are any first timers. If there are, have them introduce themselves to others and encourage them to sign up on the JAMBO HP and/or Facebook.
2) Explain the good which is being done environmentally (socially) from this activity.
3) For activities which are done under another group’s direction ( like Friends of the Earth projects), introduce yourself to the leader and help her/him when needed.
During the event
4) Talk to everyone who joins (even just a little bit, during the course of the work) to make everyone feel welcome. (Try to especially help shy people or those who “don’t quite fit” mix with the group, if possible)
5) Make sure people understand and are comfortable with what to do.
After the event
6) Thank everyone and encourage them to join JAMBO again.
This basic format applies for leaders of other events as well.
As these activities are carried out in the area around Tokyo, Japan, it is encouraged to explain in both Japanese and English when possible so everyone can understand.
